about

Chicago's Royce is back with its third full-length release, additional band members and an exciting new approach that marks a rebirth of quality independent music. Recorded throughout aughts at Chicago's eclectic Shape Shop, "King's Stagger" captures the feel of the band's live performances, showcasing their layered sound, honest song writing and devotion to vintage instruments. The album's warm tones are brilliantly produced through analog mixing boards and other classic recording gear, providing a pristine palette for the extensive instrumentation and sweeping lyrical treatments that will captivate even the most discerning critic.

After years of playing live shows around the globe, Royce's new album reveals a band that is maturing, becoming a more versatile, cohesive unit that can capture the beautiful, the poignant and the playful--all in an accessible, iconic manner. Unfortunately, these breakthroughs arrive on the heels of a crumbling record industry, which forced the group to acknowledge the changes taking place and make bold moves in response. That's why Royce has decided to give their groundbreaking music away for free. Alternative marketing strategies that include all of the standard products, along with a healthy touring schedule, will allow the group to reach out to the masses in style. Royce continues to support former label mates, Galapagos4, and new label mates, Obey Your Brain, performing shows with notable local acts and touring with monsters such as Kool Keith, RJD2, Qwel, Typical Cats, Icy Demons, Chandeliers and many more.

In many ways, Royce's new approach to disseminating its music flows directly from the concepts that drive "King's Stagger." As the album title suggests, everywhere we turn the giants that controlled industries from banking to automobiles to the music biz are teetering. With each passing day, another lost hero, another jailed politician, another bankruptcy. "Kings's Stagger" is an acknowledgment of those realities, and yet it recognizes that these travails great space for a youthful optimism and new beginnings, which are captured in the amusing bridges and break-beats that thump just below the catchy, melodic surface.

Often hailed as the best Chicago band that is actually from Chicago, Royce is a collection of city kids who grew up together and learned to play music mimicking funk and breaks beats from early hip-hop, house and disco records. Founded in 1994 by Justus Roe (a.k.a. DJWhiteLightning), Jamie Clemmons and Connor Klaus, Chicago's musical tapestry impacted them from the beginning. With the recent additions of multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Spizziri and guitarist Ben Spanus, the band has melded their wide-ranging musical sensibilities into a tight-knit, multifaceted unit. From Mississippi John Hurt to West-coast phenom E-40, Daft Punk to James Brown, Tears for Fears to Os Mutantes, the band's influences pulse through the music they make together. But while their sound may be otherworldly, the bandmembers themselves are down-to-earth. No tight jeans at the ankles or stategically messy hair here, just a bunch of old friends trying to be real in a game filled with gimicks.
